‘Diamonds are a woman’s best friend’ -who says that? Everyone loves their diamonds- these sparkly little pieces of stone entice everyone’s hearts.
With the g4rowing trends of fashion and imitation jewellery, differentiating between a genuine and fake stone is getting difficult. Here is a guide for you to help in making the right choice.
1) The most important and most reliable way to know if your diamond is real is to get it checked by a jeweller. The professionals will have special tools to check on the genuineness of these sparkly little pieces. But if you are an enthusiast you can buy a relatively cheap diamond tester. You can even purchase a high-end diamond tester which will help you identify a wider range of diamond alternatives.
You can identify your diamond using simple techniques-
2) Water test
Take a normal sized drinking glass and fill it 3 quarters with water. Drop your loose diamonds into the glass carefully. If the gemstones sink, its real diamonds but the fake ones will float on the surface on in water.
A real diamond has high density, so the water test is performed to check if your stones match the level of diamond density.
3) Fog test
Hold your gemstone in between your thumb and forefinger, now blow onto it to form a fog on the stone. If it dissipates immediately then your stones are genuine. Diamonds are good conductors of heat hence it dissipates the fog immediately.
This test is not a surest technique as other factors too are responsible for the fog to dissipate. Nonetheless, this technique is one of simplest and easiest to do and to identify among a few diamonds.
4) The fire test
For this test you need a fire torch (or a flame) and ice-cold water. Hold your diamond with the help of tongs and heat them on a flame then drop it in ice cold water. Repeat this process 2-3 times. Fake diamonds shatter under the pressure and real diamonds are very conductor of heat and hence cools down immediately and diamonds are the toughest material to crack.
5) UV light test
Place the diamonds in the UV light, it will glow and emit a blue light. Most diamonds glow in the UV light but not all. If it does glow it means you have a genuine stone but not vice-versa.
6) checking setting and the mount
Mostly real diamonds have a large price-tag hence it is set in materials like gold, platinum or white gold.
You can look for markings such as 10K, 14K, 18K indicating the type of gold used. Other markings such as 585.770.900 and 950 indicate platinum or gold.
If you see a C.Z. stamped or engraved indicates cubic zirconia which is not a genuine diamond.
